I did try to place Benjamin as the son of John Ragsdale and Nellie Harnage as
Mrs Van Leer tried to do and other researchers over the years that I have
researched with. He just doesn't fit there. I have the Indian papers packed
away for this family and there is no mention of our Benjamin in them. I am
sure Benjamin had a brother William from old family correspondence. Some
researchers think Calvin was his brother. I am not sure. William and Benjamin
both served in the war of 1836 from Arkansas. William states in those papers
that he was born in Richmond North Carolina. Six of Benjamin's sons were in
the Civil War.

Discharged 12 April, 1837

80 Acres, apr. 26/56 JA Shindel
Lawrence County, Arkansas on 16 November 1850, Justice of the Peace for
Benjamin Ragsdale about 43 years. A resident of Lawrence County, Arkansas was
a private in Company b? commanded by Captain Phillips of the 1st Battalion of
the second regiment of Arkansas volunteers at Little Rock, 31 Nov, 1836
William was a volunteer in Lawrence County, Arkansas, mustered in 31 Oct 1836,
to serve 6 months. He was a private in Captain Willis Phillips Company, 1st
Battalion of the 2nd regiment, Arkansas Volunteers, discharged Honorably 12
April, 1837. He had received 80 acres of bounty land for serving and had
filed for more, but it was not allowed. In the papers of William he states he
was in the war of 1836. He was 5'11" tall and had blue eyes, black hair and
a fair complexion. He says he was born in Richmond County, North Carolina. I
have these papers on William also but do not have them transcribed.

generations worth. To save room and eyestrain I have cut out everything but the

The RAGSDALE family is my oldest line. My
SETTLE/SETTLES line goes back to 1499 though. Both the SETTLE and GREENING
families were also very early settlers of Virginia emigrating there from
England by the early 1650s. All of my RAGSDALEs, SETTLEs, GREENINGs and
HICKMANs came to Virginia from England and then on to Kentucky and then to
Monroe and Marion Counties in Missouri.

I am Garnet Naslund, looking for information on the ancestry of Benjamin F. Ragsdale, born 1808 probably in NC, married Mary "Polly" Coffelt in Knox County Kentucky on 19 May 1825.
Benjamin and Polly had 11 children, the second , Elizabeth Carolina Jane, was my gggrandmother. I have found several references that say Benjamin was the son of John Ragsdale married to Nellie Harnage, but I have found nothing to prove this (or disprove it either). Am hoping that someone out there can help me.
Thanks in advance and "Happy New Year".

Hi Everybody, and Happy New Year. I was weaning myself off cigarettes and down to 5 a day..... then my sister died in November and I starting lighting up without even knowing it....so I'm back to a pack a day.....maybe soon I will try again...wish me luck.
I'm looking for, and think I may never find, the parents/siblings of my Great Grandfather Hiram Ragsdale born in 1815 somewhere in TN. DNA shows, I'm told, that we descend from Baby Godfrey but I can't find the missing link.
Hiram married (1) Mary Johnson, daughter of Jeffrey and Delilah (Johnson) Johnson in 1834 in Williamson Co TN and lived out the rest of his life there.
Their children: Elcanah b 1835 married Mary Ann Grimes (my grandparents)
Elizabeth b 1838 married James K Fitzgerald
Ephraim b 1843 married Sarah J Johnson
Marion b 1844 (not on family deed of 1872, must have already died)
Sarah b 1846 married Thomas Johnson
Hiram C b 1849 (no other record besides deed of 1872)
Hiram married (2) Virginia T Crosen in 1870, no issue.
I think Hiram died around 1883/84 but have found no record. It was soon after, that my Grandfather Elcanah moved his family to Tumbling Creek in Humphreys Co TN and lived out the rest of his life there. They had 9 children, my father John Campbell Ragsdale being the 6th, was born 1878 in Williamson Co TN, married Grace Harris in Hickman Co TN and died in Humphreys Co.

Resolution: To work everyday on being a better person - us humans need all the improvement we can get!
Searching for any information related to sorting out the Ragsdales of Coffee, Marion, Grundy, and Franklin Counties in Tennessee.
My Great Grandmother Isabella (Bell) Ragsdale was born 08 Jan 1856 (headstone - no birth record found). Recorded in census 1870 at House 484, Grundy County, Tennessee (home of Hiley Jane Keeling and Michael Galagher) as 15 years of age. Isabella and Anne Ragsdale are listed as domestic servants. Hiley's sister married Woodson Ragsdale. They appear for the first time in the 1870 census & I have not been able to find this family in subsequent records. The 1860 census would have solved my dilemma but they were not recorded. As Woodson disapears after 1860 & before 1870 I thought the family could have been split up among relatives.
Isabella married David Thomas Tucker 15 Mar 1874 at Grundy County. Was recorded with her husband in census 1880 at p. 301, Marion County, Tennessee as 22 years of age. Died 24 Aug 1933 in Grundy County.
All of the potential players in this family were centered around Atltamount, Ragsdale, Monteagle, and Pelham in Grundy County, Tn.
I have no other records of her or any indication of who her parents or siblings are.

Happy New Year to each and everyone. I sincerely hope you have a happy, healthy and prosperous 2008!
Now, on to business: what better way to start the New Year than with a "roll call" ...... sound off and let everyone know who you're looking for, and/or who you descended from, and/or where you need help and ..... OF COURSE .... you might as well throw in a New Year's resolution or two.
Looking for the father of Jordan and William Ragsdale, brothers born in the early 1800's in Tennessee.
